These replacement cartridges could not be easier to use or work better. They have everything you need. The filter media traps everything. It gets downright disgusting when changed which is what it is supposed to do. The charcoal is an added benefit to remove smells and other toxins that may not show up in a water test. These are crazy simple to change. Either change the 1st of the month or when you see water being diverted by the filter. When you see a steady stream not going through the filtering part, the pad is full and needs changed. All you have to do is rinse and swap. It takes less than a minute. These make keeping an aquarium very easy. With a normal bio load of fish and moderate feedings this does last a month. If you have extra fish or tend to overfeed them, it will last less.At the price, it can be changed as needed and it will do a nice job keeping the tank clean and your fish and snails happy.

I’ve been using these filters in my aquarium for years. I kept forgetting to stop at the pet store that carries this brand of filters so my filter is super old and I’ve been just scraping the crud off of it and reusing it. After a fish died and another started having air bladder problems, my friend suggested that my filter problem was probably creating an anoxic situation in the tank and to replace the filter. I had the filters in a few days ordering from Amazon. Why didn’t I think of this sooner?? Before I did anything with my tank Saturday the TDS reading was in the hight 900’s. I used the poop sucker to clean out the rocks and replaced about 1/3 of the water. I used one gallon of reverse osmosis and the rest tap. The tap water was coming out around 836ppm. Our water in this town is really disgusting. I have a calcite filter on my RO system so it was in the upper 70’s, but that sure beats 836ppm!! I put in a new filter and the fish that was showing air bladder stress is swimming normally now and the water is cleared up. I tested it again this morning and it’s down to 838ppm. The filter really helped because after the water change everything is stirred up and it had gone from high 900’s to over 1000. I’m planning to gradually change out more and more of the water in the tank for RO, but will have to do that slowly because my understanding is that a fast switch can kill the fish because of the change in osmotic pressure. I checked the pH this morning and it was just slightly acidic at 6.75. These filters get the job done, but do plug up quickly when my water is that gross.

There comes a time in any fish’s life, when they have to accept the humbling and, perhaps self-demeaning, fact that they are filthy, filthy animals. And each day of their short and filthy lives is full of swimming around in their own waste, breathing it into their bodies and excreting it once more. Sure, there is an elegant grace to their beauty, flitting around the manufactured sea-scape like a Monet painting, but the reality of their truly awful and disgusting environment fortunately does not dawn on their innocent and simple minds. But perhaps, if only temporarily, Marineland’s Rite-Size Cartridge B can make them feel what it must be like to whisper about in a subtropical stream somewhere on an exotic Pacific island. Clean water, home only to the exotic bacteria that must live in those streams, is naught but within a fish’s tiny imagination, except for those few times a month when a somewhat disinterested captor decides to change the filter. And unlike the pristine bacteria-filled waters of the subtropics, the fish need not worry about a piranhas, eels or poisonous frogs to eat it for dinner.

I currently use these in a 55 gallon freshwater tank with the largest Marineland Penguin 350
Marineland Penguin Power Filter
Power Filter made. It is for 50 to 70 gallon tanks. I have also used them for years with the smaller version of the exact same filter in a 37 gallon freshwater tank. I love these! They each last for a very, very long time, literally for months if you want to rinse them off and reuse them. I have done this a several times with great results. I have never had one tear or fall apart under any circumstances. These are filled with a charcoal medium that is in a gravel like form, it feels like small pebbles under the fabric. One side of the filter cartridges has the rough blue material as shown on the box and the other side is black plastic which has narrow slots all over it for easy flow through of water. When you rinse one off before the first use, NO black residue rinses out which I have always seen with other filter cartridges and haven’t liked. I will admit that I am fairly lazy with water changes and only do them about 4 times a year at most. My large freshwater tank always stays clean and clear with these and the above mentioned filter (and a good biological ratio of fish in the tank, not too many and not too few)! These are a high quality filter cartridges and the price through this Amazon seller is UNBELIEVABLE! I get two 6-packs, 12 cartridges total for the same price as one 3 pack at PetSmart or any local shops. I recommend these above all other filter cartridges I have ever used.

It comes with 6 cartridges, so less than 1 dollar per unit (considering the price as less than 6 dollars). One unit can last more than one month if you use an accessory filter system (like Purigen bag) inside the Penguin HOB filter. For me, one cartridge lasts 2.5 months without any problem because I’m running a fish tank with 2 filters (internal and HOB with Purigen inside). My tank is overpopulated but the water is crystal clear with both filters working together. I decided to buy a Penguin filter with biowheel (100 gph) based on the price of filter and cartridges together (Less than $10 for filter and less than $6 for cartridges), and also because there are several good reviews around. My suggestion: wait the price of cartridges to go down before buying. The price for size A (6 units) should be around $5.30 but sometimes you will find for almost $7. There is space inside the filter for Purigen bags (100 ml) if you run biowheel 100 gph, so one single cartridge can go up to 3 months when running together with a recycled bag of Purigen (I recycle my Purigen bag every month, 3 days after changing 50% of aquarium water).I don’t regret my purchase….

Couldn’t find this at the local pet store and it was cheaper online. Works just like it should. A note to fish owners–you really shouldn’t throw these out every few weeks like the packaging recommends, unless you’re specifically using the carbon to get medication out of the water. Completely replacing these filters can actually be BAD for your aquarium because beneficial, toxin-removing organisms grow on the filters and naturally break down toxic fish waste into less harmful byproducts. If you get rid of these beneficial organisms by removing the filter media they inhabit, you can destroy the ability of your aquarium to naturally break down the deadly ammonia in your fish’s waste. The carbon in the replacement filters is no substitute for a healthy bioload, and your aquarium’s water chemistry can become unstable and dangerous to your fish, even with regular water changes. (Look up ‘aquarium nitrogen cycle’ for more info, or just look at all the reviews that talk about how their fish got sick or died after they replaced all their filters at once.)Instead, make a slit in the filter media, remove the carbon, and then rinse off the built-up gunk with NON-CHLORINATED water every few weeks (you can use the water you siphon out of your fish tank during water changes). You can use these filters until the actual filter media starts to wear thin and break down. Not only will you have a healthier aquarium, but you’ll spend less on replacement filters!

I just crucified a competitors filter cartridges in review, so call me a bit discerning. The marineland filter cartridges are a breath of fresh air after my initial experiences using a competitors product. After my unfortunate experience with a 50 gallon version over the back by someone else I was left jaded and went canister filter all the way. My wife had some growing goldfish that I upgraded to a 20 gallon tank which motivated my purchase of a marineland 75 gallon penguin filter. I crammed that thing into a 20 gallon tank still wondering if it would do the job and lo and behold it perfomed admirably, the water cleared up quickly and filter cartridges lasted 3-6 weeks (occasionally we have algae blooms in our goldfish tank that isn’t the filters fault) as opposed to the 3-6 days we were used to previously.Fast forward about 8 months and my wife’s goldfish have migrated to my 54 gallon corner tank and I moved the marineland over the back filter with them. It has performed excellently in the bigger tank without any significant changes in cartridge longevity. Water stays nice and clear, minus the odd algae bloom. I will have to switch to a canister due to space constraints (I can’t put the lid on my corner tank with a large over the back style) but I’m 100% sold on the effectiveness of marineland filter cartridges.Marineland has proven to be the most effective over the back filter I have used with this style cartridge, add in the affordability of the unit and cartridges and it’s an excellent system for anyone with over the back filter needs.

Great buy! I live out in the desert, and the only pet supply store near me charges $12 for a pack of 2 filters. So for me this is an awesome deal. I have used marine land bio-wheel pump and filters for the past 20 yrs. I don’t think the review about not replacing the filters is correct. Maybe if you want dead fish. Don’t claim to be an expert, but I’ve never heard of that. I change my filters every 2 weeks with a water change and my fish have lasted years. Really, follow directions. Would you rinse a poopy diaper in the sink, then put it back on your baby?

I am the lucky owner of a goldfish that has been a great pet for many years. I credit Marineland filtration and filters for our good fortune. Between the Biowheel and these filters, the tank is kept as clean as a goldfish tank can be. Of course, water changes are still important. I agree with the other reviewers that it is probably better to rinse and reuse these filters for longer than Marineland recommends. I have 2 filtration systems on a 20 gallon wide. It may be a bit much for the tank size, but my fish is active and healthy. I would definitely recommend this product.
